Crime Code — Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how the Crime Code iOS app and the silversprojects.com website (together, the "Service") handle information. The Service is provided by Mike Silvers ("we," "us," or "our").
What Crime Code does. You describe an activity in plain English or enter a citation, and Crime Code finds the matching statutes and shows a plain-English explanation of the likely charges, with the full authoritative statute text a tap away. It is designed to be privacy-first: the core experience — searching statutes and generating those explanations — runs entirely on your device, with no account and no transmission of what you search.
What the subscription does. An optional subscription ("Crime Code Premium") gives you higher-quality, community-improved statute matches and the option to contribute your own anonymized corrections back to improve matches for everyone. It is handled by Apple and does not change how your searches are processed privately on your device.
1. Summary
- Your searches never leave your phone. Statute lookup and the on-device AI explanation are processed locally. We do not receive, store, or track your searches.
- No account is required to look things up, and the app has no login.
- The only optional data you may share with us is through a subscriber opt-in that contributes anonymized statute corrections (no searches, no personal data, no raw text) to improve matches for everyone — and in-app feedback you choose to submit.
- Subscriptions are handled by Apple; we never receive your payment details.
2. Information processed only on your device (not collected by us)
The following stay on your device and are not transmitted to us:
- Your search queries (the activity you describe or the citation you enter).
- The plain-English explanations generated by the on-device AI model.
- Your search history, stored locally on the device.
- Your thumbs-up / thumbs-down refinements (used locally to tune matches; the only exception is the opt-in contribution described in §4).
We have no ability to see this information.
3. Information involving the network
3.1 App content and AI-model downloads
To enable on-device explanations, the app downloads its AI model and statute data from our content-delivery network (Amazon CloudFront / Amazon S3). Like any web request, the CDN automatically logs standard technical metadata — IP address, timestamp, and the file requested. This is used only to deliver files and for security/operational purposes. No search or query content is included in these requests.
3.2 Subscriptions (handled by Apple)
Optional subscriptions are purchased and managed through the Apple App Store (StoreKit). Apple processes your payment and manages billing; we never receive your payment-card information. To verify subscription status, our server communicates with Apple's App Store Server API and receives a signed subscription transaction. Apple's handling of your information is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
3.3 Community vocabulary contributions (opt-in; subscribers only; off by default)
If you are a paid subscriber and you explicitly enable "Contribute my vocabulary" and accept the in-app consent prompt, the app sends us only anonymized term→statute mappings — the corrections you confirmed. Specifically:
- We do NOT receive your searches, any raw text you typed, or any personal information.
- You are identified to us only by a pseudonymous identifier derived from your Apple subscription's transaction ID using a one-way cryptographic function. We cannot reverse it to your Apple ID, name, or email.
- The app verifies device integrity using Apple App Attest, a device-level check that does not transmit personal data.
- This feature is off by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings → Contribute.
3.4 In-app feedback
The app includes an optional feedback feature provided by CommentRelay. If you choose to submit feedback, we receive the text you write and the statute citations shown in the current context so we can understand and act on your feedback. CommentRelay processes and stores the feedback you submit on our behalf solely to deliver it to us; see commentrelay.com for details on its handling. We do not use feedback for advertising, and submitting feedback is entirely optional.
3.5 Information we do not collect
- No location data. Jurisdictions are selected manually; the app does not request your location.
- No advertising identifiers, and no third-party advertising or analytics/tracking SDKs beyond Apple (StoreKit / App Attest) and the feedback integration in §3.4.
- No contacts, photos, microphone, or health data.
4. How we use information
We use the limited information described above to:
- Deliver app content and the on-device AI model (§3.1);
- Verify and manage subscriptions (§3.2);
- Improve statute-matching quality from anonymized, opted-in contributions (§3.3);
- Respond to and act on feedback you submit (§3.4);
- Maintain security, prevent abuse, and operate the Service.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data for advertising.
5. Service providers and sharing
We share information only as needed to operate the Service:
- Apple — App Store distribution, subscription billing, and device attestation.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) / CloudFront — content delivery and the contribution/subscription backend, located in AWS US East (N. Virginia / us-east-1), United States.
- CommentRelay — in-app feedback processing.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or security of users or the Service.
6. Data retention
- On-device data (searches, history) remains on your device under your control and is removed when you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Anonymized contributions are retained for as long as needed to maintain and improve statute matching, and may be aggregated.
- Feedback is retained as long as needed to address it.
- Subscription records are retained as required for entitlement verification and legal/financial compliance.
7. Your choices and rights
- Opt out of contributing at any time: Settings → Contribute (off by default).
- Manage or cancel your subscription via the in-app indicator or Apple's Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions.
- Delete your contributed data: the app supports deleting your contribution data and associated server record in Settings → Contribute, or you may request deletion by emailing help@silversprojects.com.
- Access / correction / other rights: depending on your jurisdiction (e.g., GDPR/UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights regarding your personal information. Because we hold only pseudonymous contribution identifiers and no directly identifying data, our ability to associate data with you is limited. To exercise rights, contact us (§11).
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including HTTPS for all network communication, cryptographic signing of identifiers, device attestation, and least-privilege access on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
9. Children's privacy
Crime Code is rated 17+. The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us (§11).
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and revise the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated by posting the updated policy on this page.
