Crime Code — Terms of Use

1. What Crime Code does

Crime Code is an informational legal-reference tool. You describe an activity in plain English or enter a statute citation, choose which statute sources to include, and Crime Code:

• finds the statutes that match, drawing on an on-device statute database;
• shows a plain-English explanation of the likely charges, generated on your device;
• lets you open any result for the full, authoritative statute text;
• lets you refine results with thumbs-up / thumbs-down and revisit past searches from History.

Core lookup works offline, requires no account, and processes your searches on your device.

2. What the subscription does for you

Crime Code's core lookup — search, the on-device plain-English explanation, the authoritative statute text, and history — is free to use.

An optional subscription ("Crime Code Premium") gives you:

• Enhanced conversions — higher-quality, community-improved statute matches, so plain-English descriptions map to the right statutes more reliably; and
• the ability to contribute your own corrections (anonymized) back to the shared vocabulary, helping improve matches for you and for everyone.

A free trial may be offered. The subscription is sold and billed through Apple (see §3); the price, billing period, and trial details are shown by Apple at the point of purchase and in your Apple Account settings. Contributing is opt-in and off by default, even with an active subscription (see §5).

3. Subscriptions and billing (handled by Apple)

• Subscriptions are purchased and managed through the Apple App Store. Payment is charged to your Apple Account, and auto-renewing subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription in Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions, or via the in-app subscription indicator. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
• Any free trial's unused portion is forfeited if you purchase a subscription during the trial, where applicable.
• Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies; we do not process payments or issue refunds directly.
• The current price, billing period, and trial terms are presented by Apple before you confirm a purchase.

4. Not legal advice

Crime Code does not provide legal advice and is not a substitute for a qualified attorney. The Service is for general information only.

• The official statute text is the authoritative source. The plain-English summaries are an aid and may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate.
• Using the Service does not create an attorney–client relationship.
• Statutes change; always verify against the official published code and consult a licensed attorney for advice about your situation.
• You are solely responsible for how you use information obtained from the Service.

5. Your contributions

If you opt in to "Contribute my vocabulary," you may submit anonymized term→statute corrections. By contributing, you:

• grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, aggregate, and incorporate those anonymized contributions to operate and improve the Service;
• represent that your contributions are accurate to the best of your knowledge and that you have the right to submit them;
• understand contributions contain no personal data, no searches, and no raw text — only the abstracted mappings you confirmed (see the Privacy Policy).

Contributing is off by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings → Contribute.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the Service for any unlawful purpose, or to harass, harm, or mislead others;
• rely on the Service as legal advice or as the authoritative statement of the law;
• reverse-engineer, decompile, scrape, or attempt to extract the app's databases or models except as permitted by law;
• interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service or its backend;
• submit false, abusive, or automated contributions, or attempt to circumvent the contribution safeguards.

7. Intellectual property

• Statutory text is government material and is provided for reference; it is not owned by us.
• The Crime Code app, its name, design, software, compiled databases, models, and the silversprojects.com website are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for its intended purpose, subject to these Terms and the Apple App Store terms.

8. Disclaimers of warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, current, or complete, or that the statute data or summaries are accurate or up to date.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF — OR RELIANCE ON — THE SERVICE OR ANY INFORMATION IT PROVIDES, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, damages, and expenses arising out of your misuse of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your reliance on the Service as legal advice.

11. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service (or features such as contributing) at any time for violation of these Terms or to protect the Service. You may stop using the Service at any time; provisions that by their nature should survive (e.g., §§4, 5, 7–10, 13) survive termination.

12. Changes to the Service and these Terms

We may modify the Service or these Terms. We will post updated Terms here and revise the "Last updated" date; material changes will be communicated by posting the updated Terms on this page. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Terms.

13. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, USA, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Maryland.

14. Apple App Store (additional terms)

These Terms are between you and us, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. To the extent you obtained the app through the Apple App Store, the Apple Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA) also applies; in any conflict between these Terms and the Apple EULA regarding the app, the Apple EULA governs for that conflict. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app, and any product warranty/legal-compliance/IP-claim responsibilities are as described in Apple's standard EULA.
